My new Sphinx 3000 pistol is an upgrade of the first Sphinx 3000 Competition Production. Sphinx System Ltd is now offering a lot of options in their catalog and I was not in doubt when I ordered my new gun, but more about that later.
The new Sphinx 3000 (2009 model) is improved in several points; the slide is heavier and thicker, the hammer design is changed and they have change the rear sight to a LPA Champion sight with rounded edges. Normally I would prefer a light fast slide so the recoil is low, but in spite of a heavier slide I can’t feel the difference.
I have chosen some other features to design the best pistol for my relative large hand. The grip frame is made of titanium so the total weight is 112 grams lighter than the steel version and it seems not a lot, but Sphinx 3000 is probably the heaviest PD gun on the marked today.
| Sphinx 3000 Competition Production Technical specification | | Caliber | Capacity | | 9 mm para | 17 | | Barrel length | Overall length | | 115 mm | 210 mm | | Height | Width | | 138 mm | 33 mm | | Weight empty | With magazine | | 1.228 kg | 1.318 kg | | Weight frame | Slide | | 656 g | 426 g | | Trigger pull weight | | SA 1.35 kg | DA 2.7 kg | Another feature I chose was black aluminum Sphinx grips so now I don’t have to use skateboard tape anymore. To ensure a better grip I order back-checkering a new improved feature from Sphinx. The checkering consist of 14 transverse striations a simple solution but effective way to make a good grip. In the front of the frame grip I chose fingergrips also a relative new feature and the combination of all these features gives a perfect grip. The aluminum grip can be delivered in various colors and thickness and I would prefer a much thicker grip.
The appearance of my pistol is the classic duo tone and this appearance has through the years been a trademark for Sphinx pistols. You can of course also chose between full black or steel versions. My frame grip is made by titanium so you can actual see a little difference in the transition to the upper frame that is made of steel.
All in all a super nice pistol with tight manufacturing tolerances and optimal ergonomic design. Now the time will show if this modular system with high-tech materials is durable with high quality.
